While traveling or living abroad, it is always a good idea to stay informed. Even when you aren't going beyond your county/country border lines, it's ALWAYS a good idea to think outside of your zone and be aware of the good, the bad, and the ugly around you. It not only helps you stay alert, but it helps you appreciate what you have and makes you a more compassionate and understanding person.
Below is a running list of some of my favorite things about the Middle East that I have come across in my studies. The list will probably get longer over time...

Middle East
- Great CNN documentary/coverage of the internal conflict and suffering of the Syrians in Hom by Arwa Damon (so jealous...she speaks fluent Arabic!) = http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pOvN6CJcvv8
List to my current "book stash" that I've been reading for the last few semesters and a few others = http://pinterest.com/nenajameela/books-worth-reading/
- Reliable and good source source for news (sometimes) = http://www.aljazeera.com/
- A short documentary about the Israeli-Palestine Conflict. It definitely opens your eyes and makes you as questions... http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0794321/
- Persepolis (2007): Fantastic movie about the Iran Revolution through the eyes of a young girl/woman and her troubles growing up. It is originally a French movie but you can watch it in French with subtitles or in English. Here is the synopsis. You can watch it streaming live or if you have Netflix you can look it up:
Marjane (voiced by Chiara Mastroianni) just wants to be an ordinary kid, but that isn't easy in 1978 Iran. This profound animated film follows Marjane's childhood in a repressive society, her adolescence in France and her return to Tehran as an adult. Based on Marjane Satrapi's autobiographical graphic novel, this Oscar nominee for Best Animated Feature Film also features the vocal talents of Catherine Deneuve and Simon Abkarian.
